THE JOINT SIDE EVENT WAS HELD IN GENEVA WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE 37TH SESSION OF THE UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

On February 28, 2018, in Geneva, Switzerland, within the framework of the Annual High-level Segment of the 37th session of the UN Human Rights Council, a joint side event was held entitled "Developing human rights in Central Asian countries: Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan in the framework 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, initiated by Turkmen side.

The Ombudsman of Turkmenistan Y.Gurbannazarova, Minister of Justice of Uzbekistan R.Davletov, Director of the National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan A.Saidov, Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva J.Hamidov, as well as representatives of other interested countries and international organizations attended the above-mentioned event.

The main objective of this event was to raise awareness among the member states of the Council on the work being done by the Governments of Central Asian countries in the field of human rights development aimed at further fulfillment of the obligations to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, develop international cooperation, and also serve as a platform for bringing to the world community the commitments of the Central Asian countries in the active implementation of the principles of the UN Charter in the framework of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The participants of the meeting noted that strengthening of democratic principles and legal bases of society and the state, implementation of political, economic, social and other civil rights and freedoms of every person is one of the key priorities of state policy in the Central Asian region. The participants of the meeting also noted that this event is being held in Geneva for the first time in the format of "Central Asia-UNHCHR".
