The Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union discussed issues of strengthening cooperation

On May 30, 2018, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R.Meredov held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong. During the meeting the parties discussed the main fields of activity of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as ways of cooperation and interaction within the framework of this organization.

As the Turkmen side noted, Turkmenistan considers the IPU as a platform for developing both multilateral and bilateral dialogue with various countries, as well as with the national parliamentary delegations represented in the IPU. In this regard, it was said that a landmark event for our country was the adoption of Turkmenistan into the IPU by the unanimous decision of the Governing Council at the 137th Assembly of the IPU held on October 15, 2017 in the city of St. Petersburg.

Raising awareness and capacity of parliamentarians is one of the priority areas of cooperation. In this regard, the sides considered the possibility of holding round tables and thematic seminars, IPU forums for parliamentarians, summits of women speakers of parliaments, as well as other major events of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Turkmenistan.

The parties also discussed issues of cooperation in the practical implementation of the SDG in such areas as democracy promotion, human rights, peace and security, education and science.
