REPORT OF THE AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN TURKMENISTAN - OMBUDSMAN ON THE RESULTS OF THE WORK DONE AND THE SITUATION IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN 2017

ANNOUNCEMENT

Being an active participant in the United Nations, neutral Turkmenistan, in the years of its independence, has joined all major international conventions, treaties and agreements on human rights.

As is known, the Law of Turkmenistan "On the Ombudsman" was adopted in November 2016. On March 20, 2017, at the 19th session of the 5th convocation of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, with the secret ballot of deputies in Turkmenistan, the Authorized representative for human rights - Ombudsman was elected for the first time. On April 8 of the same year, by the Decree of the President of Turkmenistan, the Ombudsman's office was established, this institution, having exercised its powers, fully deployed its work.

In accordance with article 20 of the Law of Turkmenistan, the Ombudsman submits a report on his activities and situation in the field of human rights in the country to the President of Turkmenistan for consideration; he also makes a report to the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. This report of the Ombudsman is covered in the mass media of Turkmenistan.

The first report of the Ombudsman was drawn up on the basis of the work done and the human rights situation in 2017 and submitted to the President of Turkmenistan for consideration. In addition, the Ombudsman addressed the deputies at the second session of the 6th convocation of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan on June 9, 2018, with his first report.
