The delegation of Turkmenistan took part in the meeting in Geneva "Investing in sports for the benefit of achieving the SDGs"

On October 23, 2018, at UNCTAD’s World Investment Forum, entitled “Investing in Sustainable Development”, UNCTAD, together with the International Olympic Committee, organized a session “Investing in sports for the benefit of achieving the SDGs” at UN Headquarters in Geneva.

The session was attended by the Director General of the UN Office at Geneva, Michael Möller, Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Juan Antonio Samaranch, eminent athletes, private investors, UN agencies and programs, as well as Turkmen students studying in Geneva.

Panelists discussed the mechanisms through which sports empower youth and women, best practice sports initiatives aimed at mobilizing resources for sustainable development, as well as policies, initiatives and practices aimed at enhancing the impact of sports on sporting events and sports tourism in host countries and cities.

During the presentation, special attention was paid to the experience of Turkmenistan in holding major international sports competitions, such as the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which were held in Ashgabat in September 2017, and the upcoming weightlifting world championship.
