Meeting at the MFA of Turkmenistan with the Regional Representative of the UN OHCHR for Central Asia

On October 4, 2019, the meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan with the Regional Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia Ryszard Komenda.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the cooperation of Turkmenistan with the UN OHCHR including the implementation of assumed obligations and the execution of human rights conventions in which Turkmenistan takes part. The guest highly appraised the readiness of the country to participate in the progressive processes on strengthening and protecting the human rights, including the improvement of the Ombudsmen’s institute potential, implementation of the educational programmes and hosting of regional events.    

The vital steps of Turkmenistan on maintaining gender equality and providing social assistance to migrants, refugees and stateless persons were noted.  As is known, in the end of September of current year, the President of Turkmenistan signed a Decree on granting citizenship of Turkmenistan to 863 people. Thus, the representatives of 14 nationalities became the citizens of Turkmenistan. 

Also, the parties spoke about the functions of the Working Group of the Interdepartmental Commission on provision of implementation of the international obligations of Turkmenistan in the area of human rights and international humanitarian law. In this context, the significance of the seminar entitled “Implementation of the information technologies for tracking the execution of the recommendations of the UN mechanisms on human rights” which was held today in the UN Building of Ashgabat was underlined. The members of the abovementioned Working Group, representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan responsible for the SDGs monitoring, as well as the heads of the UN agencies in Turkmenistan participated to the seminar.     

It is worthwhile to note that the goal of the seminar laid in the presentation to the participants of the special software enabling to systematize and categorize the recommendations received in the result of the examination of Turkmenistan’s reports in the contractual agencies of the UN.      

Concluding the meeting, the parties reiterated the adherence to further constructive collaboration in the area of perfecting the system of human rights protection.
